[It's Marco's voice, but somehow with a darker tint to it. And it looks like his hair's been dyed black? That's not the strangest change though. The tattoo on his chest is completely removed. There's a rough scar where it used to be though, it's not bleeding, but it's clearly still healing.]

Can you believe the arrogance of those fools? First they drag me away, then they removed my father's mark, and gave me a mockery of it. [Oh yeah. He's deadpan, but it doesn't take a lot of knowing Marco to recognize that he is thoroughly pissed off. More angry than he's ever openly shown in Luceti for that matter.] But the joke's on them, oh yes. [His eyes glitter darkly, burning blue for a second, as they might have done before.] Just because my healing is slowed here doesn't make me any less a phoenix. They can remove my tattoos and piercings but that's a simple thing to restore.

Watch and learn fools. Watch and learn.

[LUCKILY the next part is filtered away from kids ten and under, though no doubt many adults would have preferred not to see it either.]

[Marco props the book up on the edge of the fountain, and leans back to lowers his neck into the water and uses a knife to carve an old school manji symbol in it, line by line. Those familiar with the nazi swastika and not the manji symbol might confuse it for that. Marco doesn't make a sound however, but his blood is clearly revolting against the treatment, blue flames trying to battle the water, and the most they can do is hold back the damage. As he finishes, Marco smirks, grabs a bottle of blue ink from a broken pen and pulls out of the water to throw the ink into it. At that he lets out a feral sound, something like a loud crow's caw, and he shakes off the rest of the ink with a smirk, the skin already still stitching over his chest and trying to cover his neck, but hitting a barrier where it's inked.]

[He fiddles with the journal again to turn off the filter and grins.]

There. I don't know about you, but I feel better already! Now who wants to get on my good side and help me find some earrings?

[He drums his fingers for a bit and then makes a lock on the discussion.]

Where is your distrust coming from? I thought I was the one kidnapped, not you. It's one thing for your usual aloof charm, and quite another for all this animosity. Tell me what I've done wrong.

[She hates the pleading tone to his voice. And if this were him...but it's not. Not completely]

[after a while Robin will show up, pacing under the roof and watching you up there in your black haired emo glory. She's still not sure how to approach this exactly and can only hope she's doing the right thing]

[He whistles to her in phoenix.]

I know I look cute, but I'm much sexier when it's not from a distance.

[She catches some of that but it has been a while after all]

Are you coming down?

[Irritably rolls his eyes.] I wasn't intending to, no. Why don't you come up?

[she considers this]

Very well.

[she goes inside the house. It doesn't take too long until she's approaching him from behind, but careful to keep a distance]

Are you satisfied?

[... She's afraid of him? On the one hand that's strangely thrilling. But it also angers him. Does she really think he would ever harm her? That he would even let any harm come to her so long as he is nearby and has an ounce of breath in him? But no... surely it's not him, just the Malnosso. Still, he is a bit angry.]

Not remotely. [Snippy and emphasizing the distance.]

Do I scare you so much, Demon Child? I didn't think that was even possible. [A lazy grin, but it's still too cold for Marco.] You've seen me drenched in the blood of my enemies and didn't so much as bat an eye, but this gives you pause? What exactly have the Malnosso done?

Revenge is a good look on you.

[She freely admits that. She sits beside him, resting her hands on her lap and considers his question. What to tell him? Would it make a difference? Perhaps not but... it's not something she can accurately describe, this difference.]

I wonder if this is what you hide from. When everything warm is stripped away and there's nothing left but chill.

[She reaches out and lightly strokes her fingers down his face. Only a feather touch. The ring shining on her finger]

[He stills slightly, at the words, at the touch. He wants to grab her wrist and hold her hand, to hold her up against him, warm and close, and make up for the last week and a half of hell. But she's like a robin, investigating, inquisitive, scared. Brave and daring, yes, but still scared. And he wants to wash those fears away. Or take advantage of them and get what he wants. One of those.]

Is it? [He lets out a breath, still holding himself still so that she won't flee. So that she'll see he won't hurt her.]

Happiness is a good look on you, I'm only sorry I seem to have washed it away.

[He lightly brushes her cheek in return with a pair of fingers of his own, more solid and present than hers, but still lightly. Just trailing down the porcelain cheek to her chin.]

Aye, I'm more raw that I remember. But how is that a bad thing? I'm not so sure about cold though, eh? [Lights his fingers with blue flames and gently, slowly, leans forward to kiss her cheek.] See? Quite warm.

[she closes her eyes at the touch. It's nice but different even if it's the same. It's confusing. No. No it isn't. He's not to be trusted. Not yet. Not until he is back to normal and then he can make the decision for himself which he chooses to be]

It's not a cold that can be banished that easily.

[She watches him. He still carries such a heavy weight. or does he? What has changed? How far will he go? What will he do? What will he twist around his fingers? She sits back.]

What do you mean by spring cleaning their things? What is it you intend to do?

[He sighs, and pulls back with a small frown, his eyes narrowing.]

Put them away. So I don't sit around preserving them in stasis endlessly wishing for them to come back. The pineapple... [Shit. He closes his eyes, takes a deep breath and sits down uneasily with his back to the wall for support.] The pineapple decorations from my birthday with it. But the phoenix from Sabo and Ace's hat stay on my desk.

I must move into the new era. While I'll never forget the past, it... [A gulp. It hurts. It aches. It makes him feel like he's drowning and burning alive all at once to look at them.] It's unhealthy to pine for things out of reach for now, ne? [He reaches into a pocket and pulls out a cigarette to light up, holding the lighter, a red one clearly marked with a spade, sideways before glancing at Robin and offering her a cigarette too.]

[She waves her hand, not wanting it but doesn't mind if he does. In fact it reminds her of Sanji, that smell. Like a little piece of home. The only piece that she has left right now. Though his words...she can't help but remember the conversation with Ikki--the loneliness he must feel. She faintly wishes she could travel with him all that way. She will stay by her nakama always but even they won't last forever and when they are gone...

But that is just wishful thinking. Reality there is nothing she can do. She'll shift behind him and wrap her arms around him, resting her cheek against his head because despite everything there is much in there that is still Marco]

The past is always hard but...a new era... That won't be so bad, will it?

[Of all the things that Cliff imagined that they'd do to Marco ~~most of which involved turning him into a bratty halfpint~~, this wasn't entirely what he anticipated.

Regardless, he had to watch Marco's tattooing--and he didn't even flinch.]

[Blinks... and just barely keeps from trembling. Indeed, the only reason he doesn't shiver is because she's leaning on him and then she'd feel it. Feel that susceptibility.]

Won't it? [His eyes are dark, and he doesn't say anything for a little bit, just continues focusing on breathing, the taste of the cigarette, the burn of the nicotine, so addicting, and even worse in this form, this half phoenix state, raw and burnt like embers in a dying campfire.] I don't know what the future holds, but an era in which Blackbeard sucks in old homes is not something I can look forward to with excitement right now, forgive me.

I'm hardly a young hatchling. Nor am I cooked. Yet.

[Spock stands silently...face stony but for his eyes... His eyes are wide with concern.]

Marco... what have the Malnosso done to you?
