Marco still fears falling asleep on the Straw Hats ship in his phoenix form because he just KNOWS he will wake up with Luffy slobber all over him and he kind of worries: one day inside of the rubber stomach. THERE ARE NIGHTMARES ABOUT THIS.
That aside, the D-appetite thing isn't Luffy's fault, and growing up wild and hunting tigers is 100% Ace's fault (well, and a little bit Garp) but for the most part it's not all "Luffy is scary, yoi." After all, Marco not!so secretly holds a great deal of respect for Luffy, who he will become, and indeed, Luffy isn't just all that remains of Ace's will, but he IS the future. The future that Whitebeard hoped would shake up the World Government, the entire New World, and indeed the whole world.
Until then though Luffy drives Marco insane. He doesn't know how to handle him. Whenever Luffy reminds him of Shanks he wants to treat him like Shanks and he CAN'T -- or at least he hasn't yet let himself do so, for worries that it'll be bad. And whenever Luffy is dumb as a brick and fucks up their ship or other things, Marco's patience thins more and more.
Sanji and Zoro can keep the rubber brat, yoi. Marco's got his hands full with a fire one and that is enough trouble already.
Still, if Luffy was ever in real trouble, Marco might jump to save him faster than even Ace could. After all, Marco has one order he upheld above: EVERYTHING ELSE and that's to keep Luffy safe. Luffy is the future. Without him, Marco may as well give up.
