[A thoughtful frown.] I don't really know...
He used it like a carrier pigeon on one occasion, but I don't think I ever really heard an explanation for why he had it in the first place.
[Seriously. Thinking back on it now, I'm pretty sure that Watson was just a handy plot device. FAIL Gosho, fail.]
