Backdated to Tuesday; Voice/text In which phoenixes plot revenge

Hello New Feathers! My name is Marco. I hope you're all settling in all right! If you're still having problems getting lost in the middle of nowhere, give me a call and I'll be right over to guide you back to town.

For everyone else, I have a friend about my size who's in some desperate need of costumes. I'll take anything you've got. Nurse's uniforms, maid uniforms, marines, chicken costumes, bunny ears, literally anything.

Bonus points if it looks sexy on a guy.

I found my shorts at the Item Shop. Still waiting for my hat though...

You'll find it soon, eh. They're usually pretty good about hats. Even Ace found his.

[Sabo stares for a few more moments, before he snickers.]

So he ends up getting one too, huh? He's not a big fan of hats, y'know. 'Specially after chasing after mine and Luffy's all the time when we get a bit careless.

Hah, really? When he first joined the crew he didn't wear one, but he's become rather attached to it over the last few years.

Yep. He can be really picky with his things, that guy, and he'll stick with them until they're falling apart. So must be a real special hat he got there!

[Noms, noms, noms. He's no D, but he's cleaning up that plate pretty quickly too.]

[It's just as well, Marco is no cook so trying to feed two Ds would kill him. If Sabo's still hungry though, he'll also get him some fruit or carrot sticks.]

Yeah, my guess is that it was a gift. He has a tendency to hold onto those forever. [Marco too, so he can't blame Ace.]

[No worries, this'll do for him. He does slow down when the plate's down to a few pieces, chewing thoughtfully.]

Well, only real assholes wouldn't treasure what's given to them in good faith. And Ace, and Luffy too, are the least people like that. [Count him in to, although he can't say he's ever gotten gifts like that besides meeting his brothers and Makino's new shirts.] I guess that's one thing that didn't change about him through the years.

Aye. Don't worry, I think you'll find a lot about him is still the same.

He'll always be a wildfire, eh?

Wildfire...? [He tries not to think of a different wildfire, tries hard to remember both his brothers were safe and weren't some charred bodies in the trash heap. He manages it, enough to give a weak chuckle.] Heh, that's fairly spot-on.

[He picks up his cup, but doesn't drink from it yet.] Um, hey... I know you said he's mostly the same, but... can you tell me more about the Ace from your time?

[Light grin.] Sure, but don't tell him I told. He'll find out for himself soon enough.

Where should I start?

'Course I won't tell. That bastard'll just accuse me of nosing about and try to kill me again.

Hmmm, how about when you first met?

[Turns a laugh into a cough trying to stifle it.] That is probably quite true. Well, if he finds out, just say I wouldn't shut up about my baby brother, going on and on and on. It'll be payback for all the stories he's told me about you and Luffy.

And let's see... the first time I met Ace we weren't formally introduced. He wanted to kill my Pops so Jinbei fought him instead saying he wouldn't let him get through to us. They fought for five days solid, no breaks. [Not an exaggeration.] And then by that time we were actually able to get over there. Almost right away Ace figured out how much Pops outmatched him to he put up a fire shield and told his crew to run for it. So Pops knew he was actually a pretty good kid and asked Ace to join the crew. He told us to fuck off and passed out. So then his crew all tried to beat us up even though Ace told them to run; so we kicked their asses and dragged them on board with Ace. Thatch was there when he woke up, but after that Ace still kept trying to kill Pops and being crazy. So I'd stop by and talk to him whenever he let me, or at least gave up tuning me out. [And it was so gay a rainbow happened.]

And that is the first time I met Ace. You'll have to ask him yourself for the first time he met me though. I'm sure it'll be a wildly entertaining story about stupid pineapples bringing soup.

[He grins good-naturedly.] Sounds reasonable! After all, you seem like someone who'd be proud to talk about your brothers to anyone'll listen. [Takes one to know one.]

[He listens to the story quietly, but it's obvious how super interested he is by the way his eyes would widen and how his brows would knit in concern at the appropriate parts. There's a lot of things he doesn't get in the story, people he doesn't know, but he could definitely see his brother in it. Yep, not even doubting that five-day fight.

He's got questions, but he can't help but snort first at that last part.] As awesome as that pineapple story sounds, it's making me worry about what stupid stuff Ace told people about me and Luffy.

[Sips tea.] Why'd he want to kill your old man so badly anyway?

Actually he only told good things about you two. [And a few of the more ridiculous things, but Marco's got you covered bro.] At least by my time. He was a little homesick by that point I think.

Whitebeard, Edward Newgate, is the strongest man in the world. He's the only one to ever tie in a fight with Gol D. Roger. A lot of people think Pops and Roger were enemies, but it was more like rivals. They shared drinks together, we had common enemies that sort of thing, just completely different goals. There are plenty of people who think the road to becoming King of the Pirates could be achieved by taking Pops' head. Hell, that's how we got most of our reputation: through fighting every idiot who tried to assassinate him. Ace was a little more gung-ho about it, but then that's Ace for everything.

[Oooh, he smells cover-up. He laughs.] Ah, well. We did do many stupid stuff, and there's many great memories from those, so I don't really mind if he tells.

[Luckily he's already swallowed his tea when Marco mentioned the name. So none of that choking over his drink. He does spill some over his shirt when he unconsciously tilts his cup while raptly listening.]

...W-Whitebeard. So that's why. I mean, I guess I can see why Ace'd want to kill him. His name being tied to Roger's like that... [Granted, Sabo doesn't know the details why Ace hates Roger so much, but he could relate to it somehow. Not everyone is lucky having a great parent.]

Wait.

You call your captain Pops... And your captain is... one of the Yonko, Whitebeard. Then that means...

EHH?! You're his son?

[Excuse the BSOD. He's having a lot of these in this place.]

Marco, First division commander.

Ace is second division commander. We have sixteen all told since there's 1600 of us.

[As Marco has no problem with this reaction at all.]

[See that shimmer in his eyes? That's complete and utter awe shining in them.]

Wow, really?! Damn, you must be really, really strong then! That's awesome--A-And Ace is.... [And the smile spreading on his face is called brotherly pride.] Whoa, he's come a long way from being just another brat from the trash heap, huh?!

[Laughs.] Aye. Fire-Fist Ace is one of the most well-known pirates there is.

By now, he's probably a lot more famous than me. [Marco's still grinning, but it's a bit more bittersweet to anyone who knows the why...]

Fire-Fist... That's a cool nickname! How'd he get it?

[The kid's still blissfully ignorant, so he'll just look even more amazed at that, and even drawing nearer Marco in his excitement.] A-are you serious... A pirate so famous everyone knows his name-- He did it?! He actually achieved his dream?!

He's made of fire, so that's the name of his most famous attack that can take down several ships at once.

[Grins.] Yeah, I think he did in a way, eh?

...That bastard, he ate a Devil Fruit too?! And--and... a Logia one at that. That's awesome! Definitely more awesome than Luffy's!

YES! He made it! And I'm sure Luffy's right on track to his own dream... Man, this feels good! [He's so thrilled he looks about to burst. Oh, but he doesn't forget his manners. He turns to Marco, and bows respectfully.] He wouldn't have made it that far without his nakama helping him along the way. Thank you very much for looking after him.

[Laughs.] You know I think Ace said that about my devil fruit too. That it's better than Luffys, but I think it's pretty impressive how Luffy makes his devil fruit his own though, eh. I think even long after his legend is done, no one will ever be able to look at the next rubber devil fruit user without thinking how Luffy did it first and did it better.

[Grins and bows back.] Likewise. He wouldn't have made it to us without you don't forget.
