[It's Marco's voice, but somehow with a darker tint to it. And it looks like his hair's been dyed black? That's not the strangest change though. The tattoo on his chest is completely removed. There's a rough scar where it used to be though, it's not bleeding, but it's clearly still healing.]

Can you believe the arrogance of those fools? First they drag me away, then they removed my father's mark, and gave me a mockery of it. [Oh yeah. He's deadpan, but it doesn't take a lot of knowing Marco to recognize that he is thoroughly pissed off. More angry than he's ever openly shown in Luceti for that matter.] But the joke's on them, oh yes. [His eyes glitter darkly, burning blue for a second, as they might have done before.] Just because my healing is slowed here doesn't make me any less a phoenix. They can remove my tattoos and piercings but that's a simple thing to restore.

[LUCKILY the next part is filtered away from kids ten and under, though no doubt many adults would have preferred not to see it either.]

[Marco props the book up on the edge of the fountain, and leans back to lowers his neck into the water and uses a knife to carve an old school manji symbol in it, line by line. Those familiar with the nazi swastika and not the manji symbol might confuse it for that. Marco doesn't make a sound however, but his blood is clearly revolting against the treatment, blue flames trying to battle the water, and the most they can do is hold back the damage. As he finishes, Marco smirks, grabs a bottle of blue ink from a broken pen and pulls out of the water to throw the ink into it. At that he lets out a feral sound, something like a loud crow's caw, and he shakes off the rest of the ink with a smirk, the skin already still stitching over his chest and trying to cover his neck, but hitting a barrier where it's inked.]

[He fiddles with the journal again to turn off the filter and grins.]

There. I don't know about you, but I feel better already! Now who wants to get on my good side and help me find some earrings?

Sorry... You just reminded me of a good friend.

[A brief pause before Yoh decides to talk more even if the information isn't required he feels in the mood to talk aloud about his friends and things home for a bit.]

His name is Ryu, he wears his hair in this huge and long forelock. It's as long as a sword! And he takes a lot of pride about it, always checking that it's in perfect shape after a battle and what not. But... He has had it ruined several times. I'm not sure how many times I cut it, or others cut it. For a long time his hair was growing back really weirdly because he insisted in keeping that hairstyle.

He takes a lot of pride to it, but he takes even more pride to show that he's well beyond being affected by something so small. The first time it happened he got really angry and it lead us to a bad start but... I think that if it happened now he would just whine a bit and brush it again to make sure that it still looks as good as possible before moving on.

[So kind of like Marco with the hair dye. Somehow.]

That actually reminds me of my best friend Thatch. He also preferred to sport a pompadour and was always quite fussy should it ever be messed up.

I hope he didn't have that problem often, having his hair messed up, that is.

[He notes the past tense so he chooses his words as carefully as he can.]

It made me feel bad when Ryu's hair got messed up by our opponents. Ah, but I don't feel bad for the times I did it myself, ahahahaha, he wasn't all that nice either so...

[Let's be honest, Ryu was a jerk and deserved to have his hair cut several times. For a while Yoh was convinced that Ryu and his gang were exactly the perfect examples of what was wrong with humans. They turned out to be perfect examples of what was wrong with society, but not in the way he had originally thought. Another reason why he was thankful that he got to learn how to face life with a better attitude and get good things from it. The old Yoh... Wouldn't have made it as far as he had done, because he wouldn't have had any of his friends around. Not even Anna.]

I was the only one who could usually mess up Thatch's hair as well. He could fend off foes and the others were usually too nice to bother.

Ahahaha, now I wonder how Ryu would react to me messing with his hair on purpose now. But I don't think I could do it anymore, now that we're friends it would feel wrong.

[Besides with how Ryu has adopted Yoh as his boss it would feel as if he was abusing of his position, even if it's one he doesn't want it would feel horrible.]

How did you become friends once upon a time?

Hmmm...

[Yoh actually considers how to answer to that, or even if he should answer. At the end he answers, talking in an cheerful tone and with a wide smile, quickly but clearly without letting his words stumble against each other but not letting Marco time to think them over as he says them.]

Most of differences came from the fact that he couldn't see spirits and was disrespectful with them, not to mention that he was always acting like a bully and gave my best friend a beating just for being in a place they had decided to claim theirs even if it was a graveyard and thus a public area. So they all solved quickly when the spirit of an ancient murderer and thief possessed him and attacked me to take revenge against my own companion spirit who had killed him in the past. We saved Ryu and he became able to see spirits and understand me better just as I was able to understand him better as well, then he just trained to become a shaman and accompanied me to help me win the Shaman Fight and become the Shaman King which is basically God in our world.

[And that's all. Kudos to you if you could catch anything, Marco. Extra kudos if you actually believe him, because he's not expecting you to.]

Oh, I see. [Yeah, no he just takes it all in stride. Makes sense to him.]

Are there various types of spirits, just as with this place?

[Yoh's answer takes a bit to arrive, not too long but it's not immediate. When he speaks he sounds amused and optimistic as always.]

Well, every living being that dies becomes a spirit, some go to the Great Spirit but many remain on the human realm. So yes, there's various types of spirits, but there are far more than in here.

What kind are you?

[Presumptuous, what?]

I don't know, I've not died yet.

[He means kind of spirit, right?]

I suppose I'll just be a human spirit, I don't think I can just go and turn into a fairy or something like that all of a sudden when I die.

Oh? You give off the impression of a different kind entirely, but perhaps I am too used to the otherworldly.

I do? What kind do I seem to be?

[He spreads his hands with a shrug.]

Wise beyond your years and too jaded for one so young.

[Heh, Marco is good. It has been a long while since he felt close to be exposed with anyone that wasn't Anna or Hao with their ability to read mind and hearts. Still a feeling is just a feeling, it's not as if he really is exposed and even if he was what Marco seems to have picked up is far from being something worth to worry about.

And so he meets the answer with a cheerful and amused laugh, as if Marco had just shared the best joke ever.]

I don't think that counts as a type of spirit, Marco-san.

No? I suppose being a phoenix does not either, lad, but it is why I have lived so long and have the experienced I do.

I think being a phoenix counts though. Except that I don't really think that is possible, that's the whole point of phoenixes, right? They keep living even when they die they just resurrect again.

[A pause.]

It must be painful, I'm sorry.

[His eyes narrow.]

Quite.

[He gets the feeling that the kid knows exactly what he's doing, which would mean he said that on purpose to try to make Marco back off. Very well then, Marco would back off.]

[But he gives an evil glittering grin in any case.]

Living is pain, you see, but perhaps that merely goes hand in hand with consciousness of existence.

[The times when Yoh says something without a purpose are actually very few even if many don't really notice it behind his smiles and calm attitude. His own smile doesn't waver at Marco's answer, it remains in place, calm and serene as he replied in an equal tone.]

I guess it is both pain and a pain. No one really asks to be born, yet we are all thrown to it whether we like it or not and have to endure it. It's natural that it will end being pain and a pain if you're stuck with it for who knows how long with no chance to stop it. That's definitively something no one on their right mind would want to experience.

[He wants to, though. Unlike many shamans he isn't stupid enough, nor has been lied enough, to believe that there isn't a great price in exchange of becoming the Shaman King, the new God. Though his chances for it have never really been that big and he's aware of it now at long last.]

Though if spirits exist it doesn't really matter in the end if it's all tied to consciousness of existence as you say, spirits are conscious as well even if no longer "alive", aren't they?

Aye, but isn't that also a pain?

[The tone is cheerful and calm at the same time, upbeat as if the conversation had been totally different so far.]

Aye, always. [This is certainly true though. He loves stories.]
