Roxas is his babby. He will adopt him with Ikki and they will be a phoenix family.

Or something.

He started off just planning to half troll the kid for not realizing he was the first mate, but he was ironically really flattered that Roxas named him Xifer! Marco's only been truly named twice before, and while he loves both names (Marco & Phoenix) they were all about being a star/god of WAR, and you know: his species. So. :| Xifer is cooler in a way because it isn't just fire, but it's because Roxas named him HIS in the same way Whitebeard started calling Marco his son. And it brought up all those old feelings; except instead of reacting with tsun and all "I AM MY OWN PERSON," Marco has the several DECADES of sailing and experience to really feel touched and happy instead. And that is why he likes being Roxas' "pet."

He means to be Roxas' friend, but he likes being able to just relax in his phoenix state and not have to be pressured into using his words and looking after people in a competent/perfect "big brother" way, there's a sort of freedom in getting to look after Roxas as a pet bird phoenix instead. And he's INCREDIBLY relieved to get to listen to Roxas instead of have to "front" and either feign his usual deadpan calm, or use words to explain things back or try offer more than just a warm fluffy winged hug.

Roxas' Lea feels helped Marco come to a bunch of realizations about his own problems and he's always going to try to help out Roxas as much as possible, but for now he hopes Roxas just needs a pet as much as Marco just wants to be a pet for a little longer.

And eventually he'll probably write a set of "Letters from Xifer" as translated by Marco, and the first one will probably be "come flying with me" and then maybe he'll teach Roxas' how to understand bird!speak the way Thatch and Leanne do.
