GAH WHERE THE FUCK DO I EVEN BEGIN?

Ace drives Marco crazy, as is every good little brother's job. Marco is quite happy to be the big brother phoenix Ace needs so that Ace can go crazy. And he broke a little more than he wants to admit from Ace's first departure from the crew and subsequent everythings. It's a big part of what Marco tackled Namur to keep the big shark mouth shut about. That and you know THATCH. But then Namur spilled the beans anyway oops.

When Ace smiles & is truly happy it's like everything EVER has always been worth it and always will be, and Marco is okay with everything again. He'll do ANYTHING for those days and those smiles. He'll tear himself inside out, he'll kick the world apart one rock at a time, he'll murder anyone, SAVE anyone, and take all the hits he needs to.

Ace's will is why Marco made sure to protect Luffy above Ace himself. Because he knew Ace would break, and wouldn't be able to be Ace anymore if he lost Luffy. Ace's freedom is why Marco let Ace go even though he desperately wanted to drag him back to the ship. Ace's strength & pride is why Marco would tell the world FOREVER that they ordered him to fight Blackbeard, and whatever Ace decides, Marco will have the idiot's back every god damned step of the way.

Sometimes Marco hates him for it.

He hates him for losing him. He hates him for even entering his life and shaking it all up. He hates himself because he always knew Ace would, and even now, even with EVERYTHING he still loves Ace to itty bitty bits and he will never ever EVER regret or change any of it.

It's complicated.

As a captain Marco isn't sure what he wants to do with Ace more. Smack him upside the head or just hold him a hug. A violent squeeze-you-to-death hug. When they first got to this world Marco was still extremely numb from his Pops & Ace's funeral, and then Ace had to go be ACE about it and way too fucking calm about his own death and way too ready to just charge the universe and do whatever he pleased, and he just HAD to pick up Marco and drag him along and not give him the time he wanted, because the truth was, TIME was not what Marco needed and of course whether Ace knew it or not, he did what Marco needed and not what Marco wanted and Marco kinda still hates him for it.

It took Marco a LONG LONG LONG time to "accept" Ace as Captain. First there's the Whitebeard feels, then there's the Whitebeard death feels = Marco is supposed to take over and then there's the confusion of time because Ace was someone Marco once upon a time intended to follow to the end of the world as his only other second captain, but when Ace left them to hunt Blackbeard, that changed it. A lot. So on the one hand, getting over Whitebeard's death means Marco is also supposed to adjust to this new part of his life of leadership, but following Ace means he's NOT adjusting to it and YEAH TRUTH TOLD good; he doesn't want to, but there's that whole confusion of what he should do even if he hates it vs. what he wants and whether is any good etc.

And besides, in the deepest darkest, most brutally, painfully honest part of Marco's soul that no one will EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER SEE EVEEEEER: he loves having Ace as a captain! It's FUN! It's let Marco be a coward all he wants, and as brave as he wants, and still a big brother without as much of the official and political barnacles he hates above all else. It's LITERALLY what he always secretly hoped and wanted for Ace to become when taking Whitebeard's place. The part of him that was ready to follow Ace to the ends of the world and back, the part of him that rejoiced that there was some reckless idiot with as much ambition as to kill Whitebeard but as much love and care and Ace's loyalty and adventure as to become the man Ace is, STILL rejoices and is all over this amazing adventure, BRING IT ON.

Marco's loyalty to Ace is pretty much as infallible as his loyalty to Whitebeard. Part of him bristles and rankles at the whole "HOW DARE YOU" asking him to be his first mate, but the major part of him can't wait for the time when that can be thoroughly mocking so Marco can go "WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE?! WHITEBEARD?!" and they they can both laugh and laugh and laaaaugh. Hell, that day could be even be very near for all he knows. Especially with Ace all decked in white hair now XD

Marco still says Ace is his LITTLE brother though and if anyone thinks otherwise or thinks Ace can get away with giving Marco orders, they have another thing coming. That said, Marco still will always have Ace's back and true desires ABOVE ALL ELSE, because lbr, he always has. Hell, he's actually VERY VERY VERY VERY secretly very flattered that Ace asked him to be his first mate. Granted Pirate emperors and the STRONGEST MAN IN THE WORLD have asked him before, but with Ace it's actually legit, because Marco truly believes in Ace, the way he believes in Whitebeard, and NOT those other guys (fuck you Shanks /nottalking)

UH Marco's Ace feels are lengthy.

He also gets jealous sometimes because he just wants Ace to come stay in his room for sleep and cuddles okay. And he wants to be the one Ace trusts to handle shit; isn't that why he's first mate? Not just to be the one most capable of kicking in Ace's face when the kid messes up.

And for all of Marco's seeming tsun about the new tattoo, he respects Ace a lot, so it's with PRIDE that he wears it. That said, if Ace doesn't have equal pride and ambition and strength for the entire crew to grab the world and seize it and see through all of the dreams; Marco will certainly be the first person kicking his face in. Bastard, don't make him believe in you just to fuck it up like that. Who do you think you are? Portgas D. Ace???? /kick!

But yes, Under the barrels of occasional tsun, Marco's got lots of fluffy love for Ace he just bustles with wanting to shower on the brat. Ace is his babiest baby brother. He's the last and the youngest of them all to remember Whitebeard, he's the one Marco came closest to breaking himself for, he's the one Marco will change history and the future for, he's the one Marco will round up an entire army and risk sacrificing his treasure and baby brothers, and EVERYTHING he worked his life for for the chance to save; because he loves him. And he wants to burn that into Ace's brain more than everything else.

"We love you so stop dying all the time you little bastard."

If it's important to Ace, it's important to Marco. Period. He might not always get it, but he'll do it. And he has fun just watching Ace be Ace. He loves him. For some reason.
