I'm not sure which side are the good guys and which side are the bad guys. Sometimes I'm pretty sure there are no good guys and bad guys.

All right then. Has Japan ever told you about his pirates?

Japan has pirates? [EXCITED FACE.] He has not. Though it makes sense since he's an island country.

Are they friendly? Do they protect him or raid him?

Yeah, he really never mentioned it? [ He kind of feels like he might've spilled some kind of secret here. Ahem. ]

The ones I'm talking about were Japanese and Portugese who raided mostly in China and Korea. Oh, but there were some Chinese too.

Excellent. I approve already.

Portuguese?

From Portugal. It's a country in Europe, next to Spain. Do you know either of them? [ His story's gonna take awhile. ]

I know Europe is where England, France, Sweden, Denmark and the others are. I've only heard of Spain though, and never heard of Portugal before.

Yeah, they're nearby. Portugal's one of the ones who spent a lot of time in Asia. Anyway, they joined the Japanese and Chinese pirates because they could sell the goods they raided off the coast for a lot more in Japan. Mostly silk and metal. China has tons of silk and it's pretty valuable, but at the time it was hard to move it around and sell it in the country. Since not many people could make it, it was worth a lot more overseas, like in Japan.

So how did the monks factor in?

Well, all that raiding went on for awhile, yeah? Eventually some of the Chinese officials got fed up with it and recruited some monks from a few different areas and sent them into battle against the pirates. Apparently they were pretty ruthless and not only won a couple of times, but also chased the pirates up and down the coast while they fought. They lost really badly in their last battle against the pirates though, and after that they sorta stopped cooperating with the government to fight for them.

I kinda think I would've done the same thing.

Heh. [Smirks to himself. Go pirates go.] I guess the government wasn't really paying them much, eh?

Maybe they remembered midway through that they were supposed to be nonviolent. Monks and all.

[Laughs.] That would be a pretty funny reason. Why wasn't the government able to deal with them?

The monks or the pirates?

The pirates. Unless they saw fit to apparently reign in the monks for failure.

I guess they tried, but the monks were their last resort, since nothing else worked.

Heh. Go pirates. Were there any pirates around Hong Kong? Or are you too young for that?
