[video] Back with the chocobos / All the jokes

[In a scene that might be familiar to some, Marco is back in the barn, with five baby chocobo. Not quite so baby now, he might be able to fit one of them in a bag on his back, but not all of them. He can't even fit them all under one wing, but that's all right, the others he's dealing with in different ways. It might not be immediately obvious, but the loss of Ace is hitting him hard. Normally he'd go into a rage to kill things, but he doesn't seem to feel it's worth it.]

Ace's name is up on the memorial wall. He might come back... I hope so.

[There's a much too long pause in which he looks a world away and scoops up a chocobo fitted with a Spade collar.]

Ah so how about some bird jokes, eh?

You've probably all heard this one: Why did the chicken cross the road?
To get to the other side.
Why didn't the turkey cross the road?
He didn't want to be a chicken.
Why did the ducks cross the road?
To prove they could do it better than the chicken.
Why did the chicken cross the road twice?
It was a double-crosser.
Why did the rooster cross the road?
To prove he wasn't a chicken.

A phoenix walks into a bar filled with a bunch of turkeys. He gives them a polite nod and then buys everyone a round of drinks. They crowd around their new friend and offer some peanuts. "Gobble gobble gobble?" they suggest. "No thanks," he politely declines, "I'm allergic." They offer him pretzels. "Gobble gobble gobble?" He takes a few of those and they continue on for hours. Eventually they run out, and just as he was about to leave, they look him up and down and ask, "Gobble gobble gobble?" He gives them a horrified look and explains, "No way! I'm not into that!"

Why did the marines arrest the turkey?
They brought it on suspicion of fowl play!

[Shakes his head and amusement again and just glomps. So cute.]

Uh-huh. You better. [Pokes his nose.]

[Wahhh poked] I told Hong Kong-kun this, as well, after all. Soon everyone will expect it of me.

Good. Then you really can't die on me.

[Head-tilt like a birdie and flomps otherwise into Japan's lap.] That is what you told him, right?

Hm? Of course it was. [He sort of pets Marco. Yes even as a human.]

That Marco expected me to live for another 20,000 years at least. He said it sounded good to him.

[Shivers and then laughs in pure delight.]

You told him that? Really? I'm proud.

[Oh that's so cute. He admires that expression for a moment before glancing sideways.]

Is it so strange?

No, but I didn't think you would. I'm flattered.

...To be quite honest, I did not expect it myself.

So what brought it on?

A long discussion about Hong Kong-kun from when he cannot remember... And ah, it somehow lead to the topic of me dying.

And you said you wouldn't die because you had to keep me company?

Ah, well... Yes.

[Kisses his cheek and holds his hand.]

Just for that I... [He has no words for this so he just quickly nibbles Japan's ear like an affectionate birdie.]

I really love you... and I'm glad. [It helps him deal with the Ace thing more than all the rest combined. And he just laces a leg around Japan's. He still wants to say something, but words are completely failing him so he switches into a phoenix and glomps Japan snuggling up to him.]

[He flushes slightly but there's an obvious fond look on his face as he lets Marco snuggle. He just calmly wraps his arms around him in a hug. Still, he recognizes there was supposed to be more to that, so he stays silent for now, just enjoying the embrace.]

[Snuggles happily and flomps against his chest, giving a small phoenix kiss.]

Will I ever hear the rest of Marco's thoughts? [He asks this very lightly though, already satisfied with what he's heard]

[Switches back into a human, sitting very snuggly in Japan's lap despite being considerably bigger.]

I am not so sad now. [Quick affectionate kiss and leans his forehead on Japan's.] Thank you Bushido.

[Oh... He's so happy from that he's practically glowing. Though it's just a quiet smile and a little leaning of their foreheads next to each other.]

I am glad.

[Beams and slides his hands on either side of Japan's face to his ears to tug him a little closer for a deeper kiss.]

It gives me hope. And that's not something I've had for a long time.

[He smiles into that kiss before returning it gently. Even in parting he stays close. There's so much he wants to say in response, but he's not even sure how.]

[Nuzzles gently and then switches back into a phoenix ball in Japan's lap. He'll be there to listen when Japan works out the words. Besides, it's warm and comfortable like this.]

[For once he forgets about posture and sort of hunches himself over Marco, really holding him.]

I am not sure how to thank Marco.

[Blinks and headtilts, and then just chirps. What is he even being thanked for?]

Surely such a confused expression is out of place. [He strokes a hand along Marco's neck, watching with a soft gaze.]

I am quite used to being alone, even in company. Marco is someone who can change that part of me.

[Whistles and fluffs up feathers, smoothing them back down and shift about to keep Japan warm before finally switching back, though still sprawled out in Japan's lap like a pet.]

We're the same in that way then. I will fight away your loneliness Bushido, and you can fight away my fears. [Blushes and quickly switches back to a phoenix.]
