17 - [Text] Little known fact, pirates play hangman as a lesson to play smart or get hung

Hey Japan, if you're getting this... How about a game of hangman, okay?

And anyone else can play too, though I'll get you different puzzles.

_ _ _ _ _ / _ _ _ / _ _ _ _ / _ _ _ _ _ _ _ , / _ _ _ _ _.

For anyone else, how's this for starters:

_ _ _ _ / _ _ / _ _ / _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ / _ _ _ _ _.

[Wrinkling his nose.]

The more I hear more about people that are supposed to be the "good guys", the more I want to throw my lot in with the other side.

[A little sigh.]

Sometimes I don't know if I even have the right kind of focus to hate people.

[Meh. He hasn't done anything yet, and Kaito regularly associates with criminals so it's not that much of a change for him so far. Except for the whole flirting thing, maybe.]

...you should hate the guy who killed your father, shouldn't you?

... it's not the same, then.

[Not the same as his own situation. Snake still thinks that Kaito is his dad, after all. His expression flickers for a moment before turning casually sweet.]

Do you know what the term "Kaitou" means in Japan?

[Laughing faintly.] Ha, maybe. But I meant with this Kanji.

[The video moves for a moment as he draws something out on a scrap of paper and hold it up to be seen:] 怪盗

The most commonly accepted translation is Phantom Thief.

They're a dying breed, really. There's not too many people willing to dedicate their life to developing the skills. And if they do, there's usually something that they're after and once they've found it...

[A shrug.]

They're called Phantom Thieves because they're impossible to catch. Like a phantom. They're already gone before you even notice that they were even there.

But there's one back home who chooses to make a spectacle of his crimes. A show that everyone is invited to come watch. A show that he issues invitations to the police and to the public, like a little stamped ticket with the time and the place written in red ink. He chooses to steal things right in front of your eyes.

Yet for twenty years now, he's still being referred to as a phantom thief. Why do you think that is?

[Kaito does Marco one better and ups the lock. He's not... particularly protective of this secret, really. He won't outright admit to it, most likely, but he's not going to hide who he is, either.]

No. He likes the police. ... most of them, anyway.

Particularly the special force assigned to try and catch him. And the old man who always tracks down more outlandish and beautiful trinkets to tempt the thief with because he likes the challenge.

He leaves them gifts sometimes. Helped the police catch more than one murderer.

Well he wears all white. There's a clue.

You remember what I told you about color symbolism before, don't you?

[He tilts his head, considering.]

Kaitou KID has been known to the public for twenty years now. But there were eight years in the middle of all that where he was just... gone.

Hmmm~? You don't think it's the same guy?

His audience is very devoted. But there might be more than a few girls that would be very disappointed if he really were a ghost. [He's not bragging or anything. Just. Stating a fact.]

And do you want to know something else? He never keeps anything he steals.

Me? I wouldn't profess to know, I just enjoy a good show~

But then again, maybe the police are all too busy watching the wrong show.
