[video] Back with the chocobos / All the jokes

[In a scene that might be familiar to some, Marco is back in the barn, with five baby chocobo. Not quite so baby now, he might be able to fit one of them in a bag on his back, but not all of them. He can't even fit them all under one wing, but that's all right, the others he's dealing with in different ways. It might not be immediately obvious, but the loss of Ace is hitting him hard. Normally he'd go into a rage to kill things, but he doesn't seem to feel it's worth it.]

Ace's name is up on the memorial wall. He might come back... I hope so.

[There's a much too long pause in which he looks a world away and scoops up a chocobo fitted with a Spade collar.]

Ah so how about some bird jokes, eh?

You've probably all heard this one: Why did the chicken cross the road?
To get to the other side.
Why didn't the turkey cross the road?
He didn't want to be a chicken.
Why did the ducks cross the road?
To prove they could do it better than the chicken.

It was a double-crosser.

A phoenix walks into a bar filled with a bunch of turkeys. He gives them a polite nod and then buys everyone a round of drinks. They crowd around their new friend and offer some peanuts. "Gobble gobble gobble?" they suggest. "No thanks," he politely declines, "I'm allergic." They offer him pretzels. "Gobble gobble gobble?" He takes a few of those and they continue on for hours. Eventually they run out, and just as he was about to leave, they look him up and down and ask, "Gobble gobble gobble?" He gives them a horrified look and explains, "No way! I'm not into that!"

Why did the marines arrest the turkey?
They brought it on suspicion of fowl play!

Ah, but as much as I enjoy watching you blush, I don't want you to die from it or anything. [Such a high opinion of Japan's constitution.]

...Why does Marco continue to think I will die...

[Sideglance.]

Slight exaggeration.

[He finally just sighs. Which might seem sort of random, but this whole sin thing is weird... And he's finally resisting it enough to think straight.]

Are you truly okay?

[Shakes his head no mutely. If he was okay, he wouldn't be in a barn arguing about salt. Actually, given that he is Marco, he very well could be. But he still doesn't feel okay. He's annoyed with many things and nothing to do with all the pent up frustrations. Half of the emotions he is barely even acknowledging. He wants to protect his nakama and most of all, losing Ace again, not knowing how to get him back or just fix it only reminds him that he can't. That he's too weak, spread too thin. Even Marco the phoenix has limits and he's worried he's reached them. He worried that when Japan was sent back and losing Ace right afterwards seems like the scientists just wanted to see which would hurt him more. Or maybe they sent Japan home first and brought him back so he wouldn't freak out when Ace left. Or maybe...

He doesn't know anymore.]

I want to find freedom. No, it's more confusing than that. I want it with my family. I want to soar, but it's like each brother is a string to me. I want to carry them all, but I'm not... [Not strong enough. He wants to guard them. He misses them.]

I love you. [Leans his forehead against Japan's.] I want to be with you. But I do miss them. I have never gone a year away from them since I met them. Until this world, I hadn't been a month away. I can't figure things out and I still want to be strong enough for you. Understood?

I believe I do. [He just moves to hug Marco again, growing quiet.]

[Hugs back and muffles tears into Japan's shoulder. He misses his father, all his brothers, and he wants to protect every single one of them. And still trust them all to protect themselves. It's a contradiction and he knows it.]

Come on. Let's get you some tea. You don't add salt to that do you?

...My apologies.

[For the salt thing. But he pulls away and turns and starts to walk, though somehow along the way his hand found one of Marco's to tug lightly along.]

I don't. Speaking over tea is always calming.

It's okay. It's kind of cute really. [Albeit mildly disconcerting, but only because he worries about your health.]

Good. Keeping you calm should help with the blood pressure too.

[...Cute again. Sob he's not...! HOW IS THIS-- okay wow.]

...I will be fine. It is Marco I'm worried about.

I've lost him before.

That does not make it easier...

[Sighs.] Not really, but it'll get better. And tea will help.

[Basically, if he keeps thinking on it he's going to get worse and he knows it.]

...Does Marco want sake instead of tea?

I don't want to waste it.
